What makes your office unique from other cosmetic dental offices?
Dr. Austin has placed more veneers than any other Utah dentist. He has also completed post doctoral graduate training at the well known Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies, as well as residency programs for implants. Together, Dr. Austin and Eric Newell, our ceramist, have over 50 years of combined experience. In fact, Eric has not only won numerous awards, he has created the smiles for numerous celebrities, including two Miss Americas’ and a Mrs. America. Patients have told us they only want to do their teeth once. We understand, and so we never cut corners. We offer only the highest grade and longest lasting materials available. Uniquely, we also have an in-office ceramist who works with you to create a customized smile. Other dental offices send their work out to an outside lab with ceramists who have never seen you or your smile.
How long does it take to get a new smile?
Normally just two visits scheduled about two weeks apart. If you are an out of town guests or if you have special scheduling needs or deadlines, we can create your new smile in as little as 4-5 working days, with advance notice.
Do I get input and approval before the end result to insure that I will like my new smile?
At Gateway Dental Arts, we work with you throughout the entire process. We take preliminary impressions and make molds in the same shape and position as your new permanent teeth. Even though these are temporary, they let you see what the permanent teeth will look like. Together, we work as a team—the patient, the doctor and the ceramist—to get just what you want. Since you get to approve your new smile before your teeth are permanently bonded, there is no guessing or wondering if you will like the result. Instead, everyone leaves our office happy.
Will my new smile look fake?
Because we have an in house ceramist, Eric Newell, we have the ability to characterize your teeth and smile to fit your face and add the small details that make teeth look natural and never fake. Our goals are your goals. With your input, we will create a smile that is natural, one that others will admire without them knowing that you have “had your teeth done”. Everyone will simply think that you were born with your beautiful, bright, healthy looking smile.
Is it possible to make changes to the permanent teeth before they are permanently placed?
Absolutely! In fact, to our knowledge, we are the only cosmetic office in Utah and surrounding states that has both a graduated cosmetic dentist and an award winning cosmetic ceramist working in the same facility. Unlike others, we don’t send out any of our work to a lab in California, Florida, and the Orient. All teeth are made here offering the patient the ability to make changes along the way, and usually within just a few minutes time. This service provides our patients with absolute satisfaction with their final results.
How do I care for my new veneers?
You should care for new veneers just like you would your regular teeth. You should keep up with regular dental cleaning appointments, as well as a daily routine that included flossing and brushing.
Will veneers stain with tea, cola, red wine etc.?
No, our ceramist uses a high grade pressed porcelain which does not absorb stain and is color stable.
What will my temporaries look like?
Our temporaries are beautiful and will look almost as good as your final porcelain veneers. During the waiting period, while your permanent veneers are made, the temporaries offer you a chance (working with Dr. Austin and the ceramist) to make any changes to size, shape or color.
How much of my tooth do you reduce down for attaching the veneers?
Dr. Austin takes as little as possible to have the best result. It is usually just enough of a shaving in the front of the tooth structure to accept the porcelain and look natural. Of course, we remove all decay and old dentistry.
How long do the veneers or the porcelain last?
Great strides have been made in the materials used in the dental industry. The porcelain we use is even stronger than your natural tooth structure, meaning you are actually getting stronger teeth than your own. This is particularly significant in full mouth reconstruction. With proper care, your porcelain work should many years, and perhaps your entire lifetime. There are exceptions, of course, particularly if there are medical compromises or inherited health problems.
How much pain is involved?
Through oral conscious sedation, we can provide our services with virtually no pain to the patient. And we offer oral sedation at no charge to the patient, where other offices charge upwards of $400-$600. These medications will help you be totally relaxed during your appointment. Most patients barely recall the appointment and are relieved to know that they can receive their treatment without any anxiety or pain.
How much does it cost?
We offer a no-fee consultation in our office where you, the doctor and our ceramist will discuss optimal treatments and address your concerns and desires. Typically, treatment cost is similar to an orthodontic treatment. However, since there are many options available, and each person is different, the cost will very depending on the treatments selected to best fit your needs. In addition to meeting with the dentist and ceramist, one of our financial coordinators can help you select the timetable, programs and options that will best meet your financial needs.
Do you offer cash incentives and/or financing options?
We do offer cash incentives, as well as working with several financial institution who can customize payments to fit within your budget. These companies are currently offering interest free loans which have been very popular among our patients.
How much down time will I have?
You may experience tenderness the first few days, but nothing to keep you from normal daily activity. We provide prescription pain medications for those who feel that it is necessary. However, most patients don’t need them. Usually over the counter pain medications are sufficient.
Can you accommodate late appointments to reduce the time I take off from work?
Yes. We have customized our office to accommodate the needs of our patients. We understand people are busy and can’t afford to take a lot of time off. As such, we have set our schedule and office hours to accommodate major work appointments at the end of the day. We specialize in completing dentistry in longer but fewer visits. This is our niche in the market. Whatever is needed to complete your dental work, be it veneers, root canals, gum treatments, crowns or implants, we can complete your treatment in a timely manner.
Do you do implants? If so, what makes you different?
Dr. Austin started placing implants in 1986. Today, implants have become a major part of our practice. He recently completed additional residency implant training, including the immediate placement of same day bridges that rests on implants. This new procedure is only performed by a very few dentists and represents significant advances in this area of dentistry. We can also place “cosmetic” implants in the areas where your teeth show. This is important because often the placement of implants by one dental office, won’t match a crown placed by another. Some dentists even continue to do implant work that shows areas of metal around the placement area. As cosmetic experts, we understand you deserve better. Using recent implant techniques, as well as cosmetic posts, we can place natural looking implants almost anywhere in the mouth, without any indication that there is an implant supporting the tooth.
If I need an implant, or a tooth pulled to place an implant, what will fill the space?
With our in-house laboratory, we have special techniques that allow us to make a “temporary” life-like tooth to replace a missing or extracted tooth. Bottom line, you will never go without a tooth or have missing spaces when dental work done at Gateway Dental Arts.

Recent developments in implant and grafting procedures allow us to now restore someone’s smile (in certain situations), in is a little as one day! Even full mouth restorations, using strong porcelain to save the teeth that are still restorable, combined with painless implant therapy, is usually accomplished in just two visits. In short, we are accustomed to restoring full mouths, including a proper and functional bite, with phenomenal looking cosmetic porcelains that can literally change your life and self esteem. Our greatest satisfaction is to restore smiles that help people look and feel great. We’ve been told many times that we’ve given a “new lease on life”.
